On New Years eve, the Bank of Uganda (BOU) Governor Emmanual Tumusiime Mutebile reportedly collapsed while at his Kololo residence in Kampala.
The 72-year old Governor together with his personal doctor, were flown to Nairobi for further management according to the New Vision.
“He is old, and at that age, such complications are expected for everybody. We only pray that he makes it back healthy and strong, because the nation needs him,” a source close the Governor is reported to have said.
Charity Mugumya, the director of communications at the Bank of Uganda confirmed that the Governor was in Nairobi on scheduled health check up.
She declined to reveal more details saying “I am not his doctor.” The Governor is reported to be battling diabetes-related complications.
Since 2019, reports about the Govornor’s health has become frequent in the media following his absence in public gatherings related to the financial sector.
The interaction of journalists and the Governor during press briefings is closesly managed by officials at the central bank.

Mutebile has been the central bank Governor for over 20 years. His contract was renewed by President Yoweri Museveni for another five-year term in March 2021.
